Scott,
Your blog site looks great. It is interesting that we both enjoy Joe Satriani’s music so much. You must be a guitar player too, huh? I really have appreciated your blog comments on the Lakeland revival (or is it?) recently. God bless you bro!
JimB
JimB~ Me a guitar playa, NOT! I just know how to appreciate one when I see it.
Scott,
I finally watched that Keaggy clip performing Time.
In December 1977 I was just finishing up bible college and I went to see one of my favorite bands, The Second Chapter of Acts, in concert. They had this short little guy backing them up playing guitar named Phil Keaggy. As the night went on I forgot all about the band I came to see and focused on what Phil was doing. Wow, I was blown away.
I had been playing in rock bands going back to 6th grade, and up until I was saved the year after high school. Then, I was told by my pastor that rock music was of the Devil and so I sold my guitars and amps, burned my albums, and went off to bible college. But, when I saw Phil play I realized how God could use that music to reach young people with the gospel. I went out and bought a Les Paul and started going to this church that had bands that played outreach concerts at the church every Saturday night. Soon I was playing in a band and for the next 15 years or so I played in Christian rock or jazz/rock bands and preached the gospel.
I have seen Phil Keaggy in concert probably 20 times, and even met him. What an awesome brother in the Lord, so humble. When I became a dad my music ambitions got side-lined and then the Lord called me to pastor and so I’ve used my music but not in the same way or to the same degree as before.
Thank you for putting that link up in here. Using my You Tube Downloader program it is now on my harddisk.
I’m so old I actually watched the Tonight Show the night Johnnie Carson had on Jimi Hendrix and asked him how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. Hendrix answered, “I don’t know you’ll have to ask Phil Keaggy.” I didn’t hear about Keaggy again until that night in 77′. Hendrix blew up his amp when he performed on the show that night, and they got him another one. He was really stoned that night. The tape of that show would be worth a lot of money if someone had a copy of it.
God bless,
JimB
Wow, Jim! Quite the testimony there. I never have been able to verify that supposed Hendrix reference to Keaggy, did you hear that yourself?
When I was born again in 1975, I remember how amazed I was at how many talented musicians there were who were Christians, and were serving the Lord in that capacity. Phil Keaggy, is as you say, a rarity, not only in gifting, but also in spirit.
Scott,
Yes. After hearing somebody reference that show and Jimi’s quote in the late 70s, I remembered hearing Jimi say that the night I watched the show. I believe that show was in 69′ but it might have been in 68′. But, I have been told that there are no copies of the tape that show that exist to verify that quote. They didn’t keep those Tonight shows after so many years.
I believe that Jimi played “Voodo Child” that night, that is, after he got his blown up amp replaced.
JimB
Scott,
Here is how I remember the dialog:
Carson: So, how does it feel to be the world’s greatest guitarist?
Hendrix: I’m not the greatest guitarist. Uhhmmm, ask Phil Keaggy maybe.
Carson: So, you’re not the greatest guitarist?
Oh, and Hendrix answered the last question, “No.”
JimB
Again, it is my memory I’m relying on.
JimB
Well then, we know who the greatest rock guitarist of time was then
Don’t know Scotland, but I’ll have to check it out based on your other selections!
Hey, what’s the haps Buster? Yeah, I like all kinds of different styles of music
I’ll be adding a few more collections along the way.
